By noon, the courts were empty. The red clay shimmered beneath the North African sun. Heat radiated from the walls. Even the birds had retreated into the shade.

Everyone agreed the day's matches were over. Everyone except Nadia Benyoussef. She wrapped a lightweight cover over her shoulders and walked back onto Court Two.

Her friends thought she was stubborn. She thought they simply underestimated the afternoon.

Hour after hour she practiced alone. Not harder. Smarter. She shortened her points. Conserved her movement. Waited for the breeze. By the time the others returned in the evening, she had already spent another three hours on court.
